angelmaylaugh As a fan of Harlem Shakes and ARMS, I came into this expecting pop melodies. I didn't read the email about the album, just knowing that it came out and it was from Todd was enough for me to grab it. Despite what I thought I was going to get, I really liked this on first listen. Todd's foray into ambient/electronic/whatever genre is very well done in my opinion. Favorite track: nightskylight.

about

Closed Loop is the solo debut of Brooklyn-based Todd Goldstein, the singer/songwriter formerly known as ARMS. After over a decade of playing in and around New York’s indie-rock scene, releasing 3 albums and several EPs under the ARMS moniker (and one with his former group, Harlem Shakes), Goldstein has moved away from the verse-chorus structures of pop songwriting, and into uncharted stylistic waters.

Closed Loop is a 10-song suite of ambient instrumentals, half written and recorded in a cabin in the redwood forest, and half composed alongside Goldstein’s longtime collaborator, visual artist Leah Beeferman. Taking cues from drone, new age, and krautrock, the album distills the mood of Goldstein’s work as ARMS into softly pinging pianos, distended guitar sonnets, and skittering sprints that recall Brian Eno’s concept of idiot glee. The mood is nocturnal, implacably melancholy—with an unmistakable brightly glowing core.
